as depicted in one of Polish-American sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski's
original models
for his planned Crazy Horse Memorial on Thunderhead Mountain in the
Black Hills
of South Dakota. The monumental work was comissioned by the Lakota
Sioux chief
Henry Standing Bear in 1939, and the site decided on by him and the
sculptor in 1946.
Ziolkowski started blasting in 1948. After he died in 1982, his widow
Ruth and seven of
his children took over the project, now managed by the Crazy Horse
Memorial Foundation.
After decades of delays and slow progress,
the somewhat controversial undertaking has
not advanced much beyond finishing Chief Crazy Horse's head, (visible
in the background)
but is still a work in progress, as well as a major tourist attraction.
