The
partially reconstructed facade of the Celsus Library
of ancient Ephesus, Anatolia, now part of Selcuk,Turkey
(Photo © Fred R. Krug)
(The
library was constructed in AD 117 - 120 by the Greek born Roman
Senator Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaenus with his own personal
wealth,
and completed in his honor by his son, Gaius Julius Aquila in AD 135.
The interior and all the scrolls were destroyed by fire in an earthquake
in AD 262. In a massive restoration project during the 1960s and
1970s,
the facade of the main building was faithfully reconstructed from
the extant
remains. Celsus is buried in a sarcophagus in a crypt beneath the
library.)
