One of the most famous scenes in motion picture history was filmed on
these steps in Odessa, Ukraine. Sergei Eisenstein's
classic "The
Battleship Potemkin", which commemorated a 1905 workers' uprising supported
by the crew of a Russian ship.
The scene purports to show, how hundreds of
Odessan citizens were murdered on the stone staircase, known ever since
as
the "Potemkin Steps". While the massacre actually took place in the streets nearby,
not on the steps themselves, the great
film nevertheless succeeded in making the steps a place of interest for film historians and a major tourist attraction
for Odessa.
