(A new "tradition", which is spreading thoughout the world, has young
lovers, usually on their
wedding day, clamp a padlock with their names on it on one of these
artificial trees, believing
that their love will last as long as the lock remains closed. Удачи!)

Kalyazin, Tver Oblast, Russia

(In 1939 Joseph Stalin ordered a dam built on the Upper Volga River to
form the Uglich
Reservoir and construct the Uglich Hydroelectric Station. The resulting
flooding submerged
most of the historic town of Kalyazin and the nearby Saint Nicholas
Monastery complex,
leaving nothing but the Cathedral's campanile showing above the water.
Since then, the tower
has been shored up by the creation of a small island around it, and a
small boat pier has been
added. The structure now serves as a venue for occasional Eastern
Orthodox services and a
popular weekend attraction for local boaters and swimmers, as well as a
nautical marker.)
