Russia, in July 2009
(Often
referred to as a "Department Store", GUM, located directly opposite the
Kremlin, is a very
elegant mall, consisting of some 200 rather extravagantly priced
stores. GUM is not its name, but
an acronym for "Glavnyi Universalnyi Magazin", which translates as Main
Universal Store. (The "G"
in GUM used to stand for "Gosudarstvennyi" which means "State",
but since the end of the Soviet
era the complex has been privately owned, and in order to retain the
acronym, had to be renamed.)
Here's a familiar name, on sale in a fancy GUM wine store
Note: These Krug
Champagnes, left to right, were priced (in 2009) from $300.00 to
$650.00 per bottle.
