  This church, built in 1754, has a harrowing history. Its latest misfortune befell it in 2001, when
a Halloween prank set off a fire, which completely destroyed about half of the structure and
severely damaged the rest. In a monumental effort, the craftsmen and artists of the town, with
generous help from the country and from all over the world, reconstructed the historic building,
inside and out. Using local materials and everything recoverable from the ruins, and guided by
original plans and photographic documentation, the $ 6.8 million four year project succeeded
in restoring the church to look like new. It was rededicated in June 2005.
